Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy

What is Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is a type of psychotherapy that involves a combination of cognitive therapy, meditation, and the cultivation of a present-oriented, non-judgmental attitude called “mindfulness”.

MBCT was developed by three clinical psychologists: Dr. Mark Williams, Dr. John Teasdale, and Dr. Zindel Segal. MBCT has been tested in research and proven effective for depression, as well as for anxiety and a wide range of other problems such as ADHD, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and food and eating issues.

What can Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy do for you?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness strategies to help individuals better understand and manage their thoughts and emotions to achieve relief from feelings of distress. This type of therapy focuses on teaching clients to make a simple shift in their relationship to their thoughts, feelings, and physical bodily sensations to enhance their emotional self-regulation skills to promote emotional well-being.

MBCT uses these mindfulness benefits to improve mental health:

MBCT helps clients learn how to recognize their sense of being and see themselves as separate from their thoughts and moods. This disconnect can allow people to become liberated from thought patterns in which the same negative messages may be replayed over and over. After developing an awareness of the separation between thoughts, emotions, and the self, people in treatment may find that while the self and the emotions may exist simultaneously, they do not have to exist within the same dimension. This insight can contribute to healing by helping individuals learn to interject positive thoughts into negative moods to disarm those negative moods.
Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy

In general, MBCT attempts to give clients the necessary tools to combat low moods as they arise. People who learn these skills may then be able to revert to these methods in times of distress or when faced with potentially overwhelming situations.

Clients participating in this therapeutic program will be taught several mindfulness exercises and techniques that they can readily incorporate then into daily routines to foster and develop better mental health.

How Quickly Does MBCT Work?

The MBCT program offered at Zone is generally covered over an 8-to-10-week period. Depending on the severity of the concerns and issues the client is experiencing the program can be adjusted accordingly to suit and address the needs of the client. At Zone Health and Performance MBCT is often used in conjunction with biofeedback and neurofeedback to provide practical solutions for improving your health and performance.

MBCT uses these mindfulness benefits to improve mental health:

  1. Mindfulness helps the client discover their own thought and mood patterns.
  2. Mindfulness helps the client learn how to be present and appreciate the small pleasures of everyday life.
  3. Mindfulness teaches the client how to stop the downward spiral that can emerge from a bad mood or thinking about painful memories.
  4. Mindfulness allows the client to “shift gears” from their present state of mind to one that is more aware, more balanced, and less judgmental.
  5. Mindfulness gives the client access to another approach for dealing with difficult emotions and moods.
