Cognitive Perceptual Therapy

What is Cognitive-Perceptual Training?

Cognitive perceptual training may be the help you need to overcome neurological trauma. Individuals who have neurological deficits or trauma, whether mild or severe, may experience cognitive and perceptual difficulties. Cognitive perception includes, aside from the senses listening, seeing, smelling, tasting and feeling, the way in which we deal with information.

Neurotracker is a cognitive-perceptual training program that is designed to improve mental performance. Cognitive training is a form of exercise for the brain that is designed to improve mental abilities such as memory, attention, decision-making and awareness. Scientific studies show that Neurotracker is beneficial for assessing and improving performance for athletes, military personnel, healthy aging, people with cognitive related medical conditions, college students and children with learning difficulties.

However, because Neurotracker improves high-level mental abilities, it can be used by anyone looking to improve their mental performance. Many factors affect our everyday ability to function well mentally. Stress and fatigue can impair thinking and reduce alertness. The natural effects of aging can slow down thought processes and narrow awareness.

The cognitive challenges of daily life can make mental tasks feel overwhelming. NeuroTracker is a tool designed to help you overcome these challenges with increased alertness, awareness and attention for performing well on a daily basis.

Neurotracker emerged out of 20 years of neuroscience research to enhance mental performance. It challenges you to track multiple targets moving dynamically in 3D space. Training adapts speed and complexity in a way that maximizes your cognitive training at every step.

Functional brain scans reveal that Neurotracker training sustainably increases brainwave peak frequencies associated with heightened alertness and learning capacity. Peer reviewed research shows that Neurotracker training significantly enhances attention, executive function, working memory and processing speed.

It is helpful to a wide range of people from those with attention and impulse control problems, learning disabilities, autism, and aging. However, it is also frequently used by those seeking optimal performance – such as professional athletes.

Some of the professional athletic and military organizations using Neurotracker include Manchester United, Golden State Warriors, French Rugby Federation, and the Canadian Special Forces.

What To Expect

Clients initially sit in front of a very large 3-D capable screen and put on 3-D active RF Glasses. The game reveals eight balls. Depending on the level of difficulty and the cognitive area of focus one wishes to train, between 1 and 4 balls (of 8, total) changes color indicating that they are targets to be tracked. The balls then move in the virtual 3-D environment, bouncing off the walls of the virtual box and each other for 4 – 12 seconds. The client then must identify which of the balls were indicated at the beginning of the round. It is much harder than it sounds!

As your skill improves, the game gets gets more difficult by changing parameters such as the speed and angle of deflection. Initially, one plays the game while seated. Over time, advanced players may play while standing on a balance board, while engaged in other attention-requiring activities, such as catching a ball.

Cognitive Areas of Focus

  • Selective Attention – The ability to focus on a specific thing, to the exclusion of distractions.
  • Sustained Attention – The ability to maintain that focus for an extended period.
  • Divided Attention – The ability to selectively attend to multiple loci at once, and quickly shift from one to the other.
  • Inhibition – The ability to ignore irrelevant stimuli.
  • Response Control and Attention – Controlling impulsivity, “drifting off” and “tuning out”.
  • Working Memory – The ability to retain and transform information over a short time span.
  • Processing Speed – Literally, the time required to consciously integrate perceptual stimuli.

Neurotracker systematically improves your Alertness, Awareness, and Attention by developing these cognitive processes. Not only has Neurotracker set a precedent for improving cognitive functions in high-functioning elite athletes and military personnel, but it is also an effective intervention for lower-functioning populations such as elderly people and children with learning difficulties.

Zone Health & Performance Psychology uses the Senaptec sensory solution today to address a multitude of conditions including: strokes, traumatic brain injuries, autism, multiple sclerosis, and ADHD.

The Senaptec Sensory Station is a state-of-the-art sensory evaluation and training device designed to assess the visual and sensory performance of an individual. Each individual is tested on 10 cognitive and sensory performance skills using a custom app that communicates directly with high definition and touch screen monitors integrated within the unit. Individual results can be compared instantly to a normative database by age, gender, and condition to produce a customized Senaptec Sensory Profile. Every Senaptec Report identifies areas for improvement and recommends a course of action, which may include an eye care practitioner or personalized training plan.

In 25 minutes, the Sensory Station assess individuals on 10 visual and sensorimotor skills and immediately provides a report comparing to other players at their competition level and position. The report reveals the individuals’s strengths and areas for improvement. With these results in hand, now you’re ready to make improvements! The Sensory Station knows your strengths and weaknesses and serves up the training modules that are most beneficial for improvement. As they get better at the skills, the training adjusts automatically to always be challenging and promote improvement. The training session are preferably performed at our offices but can also be done at home or while travelling on their own tablets.

Our Featured Technology

Quantitative Electroencephalography

We start by using advanced qEEG (Quantitative Electroencephalography) technology that precisely measures your unique brainwave activity. It is performed to investigate brain wave patterns associated with concentration and attention.

The assessment usually takes between 3-4 hours and consists of:

  1. Interview and history. Review of previous assessments if any.
  2. A series of questionnaires and behavior checklists.
  3. Cognitive Performance/Perceptual Assessments.
  4. Psycho-Educational/Executive Assessments.
