Audio-Visual Entrainment is a treatment solution for Depression, Anxiety Disorder, ADHD, PTSD and More.
What is Audio-Visual Entrainment?
Audio-Visual Entrainment (AVE) is a drug-free, non-invasive solution to treat anxiety, clinical depression, panic attacks, PTSD or other mental health conditions,
It involves the repetitive presentation of rapidly blinking wavelengths of light that guide the brain into desired mental states. This alters electroencephalographic (EEG) activity, since it involves promoting or suppressing brainwaves at certain frequencies (Joyce & Siever, 2000).
Zone Psychology is home to a team of psychologists in Edmonton that use Audio-Visual Entrainment and Neurofeedback methods to treat many types of mental health conditions in a natural, drugless and non-invasive way.
Who Can Benefit From Audio-Visual Entrainment (AVE)?
How Long do the Effects of AVE Last?
Neurofeedback vs Audio-Visual Entrainment
The use of AVE allows your brain to be directed into specific mental states, whereas neurofeedback (NF) training involves your brain learning to be in that state. This occurs through the promotion of certain brainwave frequencies, and the suppression of others through the principles of operant conditioning.
As the brain produces desired magnitudes of targeted brainwave frequencies, it is rewarded by our software. After many sessions of NF training, the brain learns how to be in a certain state, and the effects will be lifelong, barring any traumatic brain injuries, emotional trauma, substance use, and major lifestyle changes. AVE is beneficial to use in conjunction with NF, as it can be used to help guide the brain to produce the frequencies being taught.
Benefits of Audio-Visual Entrainment
What happens during an AVE session? (Mind/Body Benefits of AVE)
Your EEG activity is being altered– As the AVE frequency changes, so does the frequency of brainwaves.
You are being dissociated – When using AVE, you get drawn into the present moment and let go of thoughts relating to your daily hassles, hectic schedules, paying bills, worries, or anxieties and stop the unhealthy mental “chatter.” Dissociation involves a “disconnection” of self from thoughts and body awareness, as is experienced during deep meditation. Dissociation begins in four to eight minutes from properly applied AVE.
Your limbic system is being stabilized – Your body is calmed, your breathing becomes rhythmic, your hands warm and your muscles relax.
A number of neurotransmitters are being produced – People with depressed mood have low levels of serotonin and norepinephrine. AVE may be used to boost brain levels of serotonin, endorphins, melatonin, and norepinephrine to improve overall well-being. Increasing endorphins allows enhanced relaxation and calm, while boosting norepinephrine and suppressing melatonin promotes improved alertness (Shealy, 1989)
Your cerebral blood flow is being increased- Good levels of cerebral blood flow are crucial for proper mental health and cognitive functioning. Several mental health disorders are associated with inadequate cerebral blood flow, including anxiety, depression, attentional disorders, and many others. AVE has been shown to substantially and rapidly increase cerebral blood flow (Fox & Raichle, 1985).
Side Effects of AVE
AVE is very safe to use. Some individuals may experience headaches, which can typically be counteracted by staying hydrated prior to each session. AVE may also induce vertigo or feelings of anxiety, though these are strictly temporary, and will stop rapidly upon termination of a session. Switching protocols will often solve any such issues. Individuals with a history of epilepsy or seizures are not recommended to use AVE unless under the supervision of a qualified health care professional, as there is a chance that the rapidly blinking lights may evoke a seizure.
Prior to beginning your AVE sessions, we will demonstrate how to operate your AVE device, and provide you with the recommended protocols best suited to your needs in order to mitigate the risk of any adverse effects.
Common AVE Protocols
AVE for Students
AVE may be used in several capacities useful to students. Focus and attention while studying can be improved, while simultaneously tuning out distracting thoughts.
Research has shown that use of AVE while studying can also accelerate the learning process (Siever, 2006). Test anxiety symptoms or feelings of anxiousness before a presentation may also be alleviated, leaving the user in a calmer, more confident state.
The benefits of AVE also translate into better sleep, enabling students to take on their high stress days and exams feeling refreshed and competent. Using the sleep function may help individuals fall asleep easier and stay asleep throughout the night.
