Common Signs & Symptoms of Depression

What is depression? What are the typical symptoms of depression?

Everyone has bad days sometimes. Depression is different from that. It can start at any time and last for a long time. Depression can be caused by many different things. There are many things that can influence mood, including genetics, brain chemistry, lifestyle, environment, personality, and how stressed out someone is. If someone has been feeling down for more than two weeks and they have thoughts of suicide, it is important to get help from a counselor or psychologist right away.

For example, research indicates that 12.6% of Canadians will experience clinical depression. A key feature of depression is persistent negative emotions and thoughts. Clients who suffer from depression show enhanced attention to and memory for negative emotional stimuli (often about the past or things beyond their control) and this attentional bias strongly coincides with the severity of the symptoms that the client is experiencing at any given time.

Depression can often mean not doing anything. For many people, it can be hard to take action and get help. If you or a loved one are experiencing any of the following symptoms, it is very important to seek professional help right away.

Emotional Symptoms

  • Feeling sad or down
  • Feeling guilty
  • Feeling worthless
  • Feeling hopeless, like things will not get better
  • Feeling empty, like you cannot feel any emotion
  • Feeling irritated
  • Thinking that things will not get better
  • Thinking that nothing makes you happy anymore
  • Thinking that problems are your fault
  • Thinking that you are not good enough
  • Thinking about dying or ending your life
  • Having a hard time thinking clearly, concentrating or making decisions
  • No longer liking things you used to like

Physical Symptoms

  • Insomnia or excessive sleeping
  • Headaches
  • Back pain, chest pain, muscle aches and joint pain
  • Having aches and pains that do not seem to be caused by another health problem
  • Digestive problems
  • Exhaustion and fatigue (Feeling tired or run down most of the time)
  • Change in appetite or weight
  • Self destructive behavior (alcohol or drug use/abuse)
  • Eating much less or eating much more than usual.
  • Feeling restless, like you cannot sit still.

What Causes Depression and What Are Its Effects on the Brain?

Psychologists can use brainwave patterns to diagnose people who are depressed and figure out the best way to treat them. There are certain patterns of brain activity that have been linked with depression. This includes an asymmetry of frontal lobe activity, deficiency of slow-wave activity or excessive fast-wave activity in the occipital or posterior region of the brain, and also a deficiency in 13-15 Hz activity over the sensorimotor cortex. Bipolar conditions are usually associated with brainwave anomalies in both the front and the back of the brain.
Depression Treatment Options Edmonton Psychology Clinic

Studies show that people who are depressed have less activity in the left side of their brain. This part of the brain is responsible for getting us into positive moods and interacting with others effectively. When this side slows down, we naturally pull away from others and lose interest in things. We want to withdraw to our bed and just lay there.

When we feel overwhelmed by the stress and strain of life, it is natural for our moods to become very negative. Everything seems uninteresting and flat. Our energy levels are low and we might not be able to sleep well. This can go on for more than two weeks, which is when it becomes a serious problem.

Major Depression Is Characterized By A Triad Of Symptoms:

  1. Low or depressed mood
  2. Loss of interest or pleasure in almost all activities (anhedonia)
  3. Low mental and physical energy or fatigue

What Can We Do To Help Treat Depression?

Most doctors, the health care system, and insurance companies in Canada think that antidepressant medications are the best way to treat people. Unfortunately, these medications sometimes cause unpleasant side effects, including:

  • Nausea
  • Increased appetite and weight gain
  • Loss of sexual desire and other sexual problems, such as erectile dysfunction and decreased orgasm
  • Fatigue and drowsiness
  • Insomnia
  • Dry mouth
  • Blurred vision
  • Constipation

Long-Term Effects of Antidepressants

  • Sexual problems (72%), including the inability to reach orgasm (65%)
  • Weight gain (65%)
  • Feeling emotionally numb (65%)
  • Not feeling like themselves (54%)
  • Reduced positive feelings (46%)
  • Feeling as if they’re addicted (43%)
  • Caring less about other people (36%)
  • Feeling suicidal (36%)

If You Stop Taking Antidepressants, What Is The Best Way To Recover From Depression?

The process of healing the brain is a lot slower than recovering from the symptoms. In fact, it can take up to 9 months for your brain to recover completely.

Do Antidepressants Shorten Your Life?

According to recent studies, persons on antidepressants had a 33% increased risk of dying prematurely when compared to those who were not taking the drugs. In addition, antidepressant users had a 14% higher chance of suffering an adverse cardiac event such as stroke or heart attack.

Zone Health & Performance Psychology provides non-pharmaceutical cutting-edge evidence-based depression treatments with comprehensive assessments and personalized treatment plans for each individual. When creating a treatment plan for depression, it is important to take into account many different factors. These can include your background, family history, and current support system. It is also important to consider any co-occurring issues or trauma you may have experienced. Finally, your baseline functioning must be considered in order to choose the most effective and comprehensive

How Do We Help?

Depression is a mental health condition that affects millions of people each year. While there are many treatments available, such as medication and therapy, some people find that they don’t work for them. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of therapy that has been shown to be effective in treating depression. In CBT, you work with a therapist to identify the thoughts and behaviors that contribute to your depression, and then learn new ways to deal with them. If you’re interested in trying CBT for your depression, here’s what you need to know. Zone Health and Performance Psychology has been working with clients suffering from depression for over 15 years with Neurofeedback.

Neurofeedback Therapy For Depression

Neurofeedback, also known as EEG Biofeedback, is a guided exercise for the brain that is shown to help normalize brainwaves. It is a learning modality designed to retrain abnormal brainwave patterns using a system of audio and visual feedback. Neurofeedback is safe, long-lasting, and has no side effects.

It can be a great choice if you want to avoid medications. The first step is booking an assessment with Zone Health and Performance Psychology, and we can explore options and answer any questions you have.

When treating depression with neurofeedback, the therapist places an electrode on the scalp over each side of the brain. Although the technology is quite sophisticated, the process is simple and painless. The client learns to alter brain activity through feedback and practice, and the goal is to increase alpha brain waves on the right side while reducing them on the left.

As the left side of the brain becomes more active, individuals begin to feel more positive in their moods.

The abnormal brainwave activity diminishes throughout training sessions, and brainwave patterns improve.

Neurofeedback May Be The Right Treatment For You If You Are Struggling With Depression!

It can be a great choice if you want to avoid medications. The first step is booking an assessment with Zone Health & Performance Psychology, and we can explore options and answer any questions you have.

Neurofeedback is a very effective treatment for mood disorders because it corrects the root causes in the brain. We offer two types of Neurofeedback Therapy to address the symptoms of depression. We have also found that when these therapies are applied simultaneously with Neurofeedback Therapy, they are highly effective. This comprehensive approach to treating clinical anxiety is both effective and fast in terms of helping people recover from their anxiety. It also reduces the chance that people will relapse in the future.

Counseling Therapy For Depression

Neurofeedback Therapy is frequently the first choice of treatment at Zone Health & Performance Psychology because it capitalizes on the brain’s ability to self-correct. Resistance to change is a common stumbling block in Counselling, and Neurofeedback can be an effective tool for assisting anyone of any age in making behavioral and cognitive adjustments more easily.

Counselling and Neurofeedback work together to reduce stress, improve focus, memory, and decision making, increase productivity and emotional resistance, enhance restorative sleep and strengthen positive interpersonal relationships.
