What Exactly is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that has been clinically observed for more than 200 years. Did you know that ADHD is the most prevalent childhood psychiatric disorder in Canada? Difficulty concentrating, impulsiveness, excessive energy and inability to sit still are some of the most common symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It is also important to understand that all regulation of attention is impaired in ADHD. Over-focusing can be as much of an issue as inattention. Prioritizing attention and breaking and shifting attention can all be impaired. Likewise, executive functioning impairment and mood dysregulation also impact many children and adults with ADHD.

The number of children diagnosed with ADHD continues to increase, but researchers don’t know why. Currently, it’s estimated that 1.1 million Canadian adults have ADHD, according to the Centre for ADHD Awareness Canada. Unfortunately, ADHD remains under-recognized and underdiagnosed even though it is the most treatable psychiatric disorder in Canada.

ADHD has three main subtypes: Hyperactive-Impulsive, Inattentive, and Combined Hyperactive-Impulsive and Inattentive. These subtypes result in symptoms of ADHD that can have devastating effects on both children and adults.

When Do Symptoms of ADHD Appear?

While the symptoms often appear around the age of 7, ADHD can appear at any time throughout adolescence and beyond. If left untreated in children, ADHD symptoms cause disruptive behavior at home and school. When directed to sit still and concentrate, it can be nearly impossible for some kids with ADHD. This can result in learning deficits, falling behind in school, acting out and taking too many risks. For adults, it’s a challenge, too. It isn’t about discipline, or forcing an individual to focus; rather, effective treatment is about identifying the best ways to increase concentration and focus while simultaneously decreasing the stress and anxiety that accompany ADHD. ADHD is associated with lower cognitive function in attention and memory, particularly when symptoms of depression are also present.

At Zone Health & Performance Psychology, we strongly believe that effective assessment and treatment procedures for ADHD should be multi-modal. The assessment and potential diagnosis of ADHD is not an easy fifteen-minute doctor’s visit.

Unfortunately, when parents, adolescents, and adults start actively looking for solutions and treatments to effectively deal with this neurobiological disorder, Western medicine solely relies and focuses on prescription medications that don’t cure ADHD. Instead, they only suppress some of the symptoms. In addition, these medications are linked to delayed growth, sleep problems, decreased appetite and heart problems. To make it worse, the most common drugs prescribed are linked to personality changes, suicidal thoughts and other disturbing side effects.

Central nervous system stimulants can cause nervousness, agitation and anxiety, all of which are already symptoms of ADHD. Some of the most prescribed medications today are known to be highly addictive. On top of the ones listed above, other side effects include hallucinations, muscle twitches, high blood pressure and extreme mood swings.

Fortunately, there is a way to mitigate many of the symptoms of ADHD without always relying on prescription stimulants. Zone Health & Performance Psychology offers natural non-pharmaceutical evidence-based approaches and strategies that can provide long-term benefits to help ease the devastating symptoms of ADHD.

Neurofeedback is uniquely suited to addressing the neuronal dysregulation typically seen in the Frontal Lobes of the Brain. The most common pattern is a slowing of brainwave activity which is opposite of what is desirable when attention and concentration is required. This generally means the area is under-activated and is using less glucose and oxygen than it should. Although we all have difficulty attending to things that don’t excite us, for children and youth with ADHD even more slowing occurs. This results in significant interference with attention, short term memory and emotional evaluation. Some individuals will fall asleep or enter into a daydreaming state in 90 seconds if forced to attend a boring stimulus. The agitation they experience when forced to attend in class or complete homework is physically painful for them. When they do pay attention, it is like trying to follow a story or conversation on television or an electronic devise and someone else is changing the channel or controlling the screen.

Adults diagnosed with ADHD also experience similar difficulties because they don’t absorb important information and frequently make errors, like forgetting important deadlines or requests. This can have a profound impact on interpersonal relationships, job performance and quality of life.

It is difficult for people of any age with ADHD to observe and understand why and where their problem is coming from. They frequently feel as though everyone is out to get them or that they are getting unfairly picked on or misunderstood. They often become hypervigilant, angry and defensive. At this point, the picture becomes much more complex and symptoms of Anxiety and/or Depression need to be addressed as well. This is why having a qEEG Quantitative Brain Map done before starting Neurofeedback is critically important for personalizing protocols for the training and optimizing the outcome.

Neurofeedback is a Clinically Proven, Natural Approach to ADHD Treatment

Neurofeedback is a natural approach that is backed by more than 50 years of research and it addresses the underlying factors that contribute to ADHD.

Stimulant-Free ADHD Treatments

Unlike stimulants, neurofeedback training has shown to have a direct long-term effect on increasing the person’s ability to remain focused and spend extended periods of time concentrating in a problem-solving manner. In addition, neurofeedback has shown to have a similar effect to stimulants, in that it increases the child’s “natural guards” to inhibit or avoid impulsive actions. Children already taking medication can continue while training. In most cases, it is possible to gradually reduce the dosage as self-regulation is mastered. Frequently, the need for medication is eliminated, but results are not guaranteed and are subject to the individual.

Neurofeedback training is the opposite of therapy or treatment by means of medication. In neurofeedback training, children quickly recognize that no one is doing “it” to them. They are totally in control, responsible, empowered and working it out for themselves. This feedback is nothing more or less than a useful tool that allows them to learn self-regulation.

The ADHD Neurofeedback program offered by Zone Health & Performance Psychology can be conducted either:

At our office which takes approximately three to five months to complete depending on the severity of the symptoms that the client is experiencing. This is conducted through a minimum of twice-weekly sessions.

At the convenience of your home, under the guidance of our professional neurofeedback technicians, we will provide a personalized training plan and monitor your progress remotely so that you can achieve the best results. Clients utilizing this approach have the opportunity to train their brain waves every day, twice a day, by playing specialized games or watching movies and/or videos. When your brain waves are in the target range, you will advance in the game or have a crisper viewing experience. This real-time monitoring and rewarding is known as operant conditioning.
