How Does Medication Work?
The standard protocol for ADHD has traditionally been medication. The role of the medication stimulates the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is associated with pleasure, attention and movement. Medication is meant to treat the symptoms but are not targeted at correcting the cause.
Can Medication Fix the Problem?
Medication does not cure ADHD – it merely treats the symptoms for as long as you are taking it. Some people experience great success with medication, others do not. A long-term solution requires a different kind of intervention.
How Can Neurofeedback Help with ADHD Treatment?
The goal of all neurofeedback is to transform an unhealthy, abnormal brainwave pattern into a normal, healthy, organized pattern. By doing this, the brain becomes more stable and is able to operate optimally and efficiently.

Unlike stimulants, neurofeedback training has shown to have a direct long-term effect on increasing the person’s ability to remain focused and spend extended periods of time concentrating in a problem-solving manner.
In addition, neurofeedback has shown to have a similar effect to stimulants, in that it increases the child’s “natural guards” to inhibit or avoid impulsive actions. Children already taking medication can continue while training. In most cases, it is possible to gradually reduce the dosage as self-regulation is mastered. Frequently, the need for medication is eliminated, but results are not guaranteed and are subject to the individual.
Neurofeedback training is the opposite of therapy or treatment by means of medication. In neurofeedback training, children quickly recognize that no one is doing “it” to them. They are totally in control, responsible, empowered and working it out for themselves. This feedback is nothing more or less than a useful tool which allows them to learn self-regulation.
The ADHD program offered by Zone Psychology takes approximately five to six months to complete depending on the severity of the symptoms that the client is experiencing. This is conducted through a minimum of twice-weekly sessions.
ADHD Treatment and Assessment Process
- Interview and review of history, along with a review of previous doctor’s reports, if any.
- Questionnaires and Behavioural Check-lists
- A Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG) assessment and a written report. The qEEG is an assessment tool designed to objectively and scientifically evaluate a person’s brainwave patterns. The procedure consists of placing a snug cap on the head. The brainwave data recorded with the qEEG is statistically compared to a sophisticated and large normative database and a report is generated. This assessment procedure allows the assessment supervisor to determine, in a scientific manner, whether a client’s brainwave patterns are different from normal. The qEEG assessment provides our specially-trained staff with the neurofeedback training protocols that will be used during the training sessions. These protocols are designed to retrain the brainwave patterns toward normal. As the brainwave patterns normalize, the brain is able to operate more optimally and efficiently.
- Continuous Performance Tests: Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA) & Intermediate Visual Auditory continuous performance test (IVA) and a written report of the results from these assessments.
- Abbreviated Neurofeedback Training session to demonstrate what neurofeedback entails.
After the comprehensive assessment is performed, neurofeedback training can commence . The assessment procedure allows the psychologist to determine neurofeedback training protocols that will be used during the training sessions. These protocols are unique to each individual, and provide a design for training that will be the most effective for that individual. These protocols are designed to retrain the brainwave patterns toward normal. As the brainwave patterns normalize, the brain is able to operate more optimally and efficiently.
Once the protocols are determined the individual is hooked up to a computer using wires and electrodes and the computer records their brainwave activity. These electrodes are noninvasive, as no electrical current is put into the brain. The electrodes simply record the brainwaves coming from the brain. Information about these brainwaves is displayed on the technician’s monitor.
The software automatically detects when the brainwaves are properly ordered and it feeds that information back to the patient. This feedback appears in the form of a game, movie, or sound which signals the patient that the brainwaves are becoming more ordered. For example, the patient is watching a puzzle of a picture that is being filled in piece by piece. As long as the patient’s brain waves are moving in an orderly direction, the puzzle pieces are filled in and the patient hears a tone. If the brainwave patterns move away from an orderly pattern, then the puzzle does not get filled in and no tone is produced. The patient is actually controlling the completion of the puzzle with their brain and by doing so; the brain is learning how to regulate itself.
In another design, the patient performs the training while watching a movie. In this case, the patient may watch a movie on Netflix that is being controlled by their ability to regulate their brainwaves. The movie will get brighter and the volume louder as the brain waves normalize and become darker and quieter when they become dysregulated.
The brain’s natural desire to watch the movie clearly will drive those neurological circuits that normalize the brainwaves and allow the picture to be visualized. The more those circuits are driven and used – the more neuroplastic changes take hold. The patient learns how to use those new circuits during the demands of everyday life.
Progress testing is done on a case by case basis, typically after 10 – 20 sessions. The initial assessment battery is repeated at NO CHARGE and the progress and results are discussed.
Individuals who have neurological deficits or trauma, whether mild or severe, may experience cognitive and perceptual difficulties. Researchers have found that 75-90% of children with learning disabilities present with motor difficulties, which often are accompanied by perceptual deficits.
Cognitive and perceptual rehabilitation is indicated when a patient or client presents with deficits in these areas during medical, physical therapy, or occupational assessments. Difficulties may appear in fine and visual motor performance, motor planning abilities, and/or sensory integration. The individual may remember events incorrectly and have difficulty perceiving new information. In addition, he or she may have inappropriate responses to sensory input due to deficits in sensory processing.
